What's in a Name?

As a swimmer, the ocean is my ‘happy place’, somewhere I feel deeply connected to myself and my environment. When thinking of a name for my own business, it felt important for water to be represented. But the name ‘Blue Wave’ is more than just a personal gesture; the analogy of waves within a counselling setting also strikes me as fitting.

Waves can represent our experiences in life, our emotions and behaviours. The goal of counselling is not to get rid of feelings, it is to support in identifying them and being able to ‘sit with’ and react to them in a way that is healthy for us.

Waves can be huge and tumultuous; entangling us, throwing us around and leaving us to somehow come out the other side and feel beaten in the process.

Waves can be big and strong, but we can learn to body surf and ride the big times, being prepared to tumble if needed, almost having fun with that.

Waves can be unpredictable and catch us off guard or we can look out a bit further to sea and know a set is coming so we know what to expect and we can prepare the timing of our response.

Waves can be ripples, gentle and soothing, allowing us to sway and feel nurtured.

Waves are not permanent, they come and go. Sets might feel like they last for an eternity or are quickly over.

Waves are never the same…
